I’ll see what I can, I’m doing eight shows a week…But my real priority is ‘THE PEE WEE HERMAN SHOW’

This is yours truly (Literary Manager Ike Holter) in the VOTE NAKED ad that’s going around. Slutty, maybe. Political? Totally!
I’m the black one with the grill.

And so it goes.
With our last big show for the season (The Fly Honey Show, R.I.P) finished—we met this past weekend and discussed the further directions of The Inconvenience as an entity.
The most difficult aspect of this is going to be helping our audience understand that The Inconvenience Headquarters is simply that; a headquarters.
With CHICAGOLAND and STRAPPED, we hopefully have taken the first steps in showing that we are bigger then the space.
So, we’re figuring out how to spend the next month and a half in the space. Our lease runs up on the 1st of November, but, before that, we’re trying to assemble a proper goodbye.
We’ll have a formal announcement within the next week, but until then—stay tuned!

This past weekend, THE FLY HONEY show went off without a hitch at The Inconvenience headquaters.
For an hour and a half, 20 women sang, danced, played music and scored laughs as we attempted to reinvent burlesque for 2010.

The night began with Myself (Ike Holter), joined by Mary Williamson in a big song and dance number that introduced the world of burlesque.
From there, we went into a furious version of Kander and Ebb’s “Mein Herr”, followed by a stripped down (literally) acoustic and violin arrangement of Cy Coleman’s “Hey Big Spender.”

Above is Rachel Eve, who preformed not only “Big Spender”, but also Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the wind”, which was, of course, immortalized in “Forrest Gump”.
We had over 300 people(!) crammed into the theater, some standing, some squashed against windowpanes and radiators.
All were very respectful, but also embraced the bawdy atmosphere of the evening.
While talking to one of the performer’s (very very very supportive) Mother, I realized what a crazy undertaking this entire night was.
Yes, there was a little bit of nudity, but, more importantly, we brought over 20 proud, fierce and beautiful woman on a stage that is perpetually filled with men. These women might have been scantily clad, but the power behind their voices, their instruments and their dances would have been just as relevant wearing a floor-length ball-gown or two pasties and a smile.

What’s the Fly Honey Show?

Check it out.
Burlesque: Done right.
Instead of getting drunk women on stage in some co-ed dorm—shaking their ass, flashing their sass—
The Open Space Project and The Inconvenience are getting trained dancers.
Wonderful singers.
And two rocking hosts to tear through an hour of Burlesque reinvention.
Think of it as a mishmash of showmanship.
Erin Kilmurray—the mastermind behind the hot dace moves of CHICAGOLAND—assembled over 20 women, gave them intense choreography, and instilled in them the power and presence of Amazon Warriors.
As a gay man walking through my living room this does nothing for me, but as a human being with a pulse this does EVERYTHING.
The night’s being hosted by yours truly, and co-hosted by Mary Williamson.
We’re putting together the numbers and bits as we speak, trying to staple this towering mass together.

Below is a still from the trailer for THE FLY HONEY SHOW, filmed by Incon regular David Gerber.
Wanna see more? Come on over August 28th! 9:30pm!

Tonight, we resurrect CHICAGOLAND and STRAPPED @ the 22nd annual Abbie Hoffman Theatre Festival.
For those poor souls who don’t know, ABBIEFEST is a 72 hour slam-bang theater fest where the who’s-who-of-the-hottest-of-the-hot rubs elbows with the hottest-of-the-not.
We are in the latter.
BUT, we are going to bring the house down.
We are presenting STRAPPED—
The 17 minute one woman show by Caitlin Parrish, directed by Emily Ruesswig and staring Missi Davis—at 11:55.
Then, at 12:12, CHICAGOLAND will begin—a stripped down version of the mutli-racial-sing-song-hip-hopping musical that we preformed at The Chopin.
This is not our first time @ Abbiefest.
We made our debut there with LOCOMOTIVE SHARK in ‘08, then again with CHILDREN OF BOYZTOWN in ‘09 (pictures to come!)
With only a few rehearsals, it’s been great putting CHICAGOLAND together.
We have a few new additions (Amanda Miller as MOLLY, tearing up a storm; as well as William Gillespi being upgraded from MIGHTY ENSEMBLE into CHUCK)—but it’s the same CHICAGOLAND.
The only thing that’s changed is the energy, attitude, and intelligence of the performers. There’s a sharper, darker edge to it, and I can’t wait for the audience to see it.
STRAPPED, as we saw in the Filet of Solo Festival @ Lifeline Theater, is still hot to trot, and you can bet Missi will crack that whip WAY to close to the audiences faces.
ABBIEFEST is actually the perfect enviorment for STRAPPED.
We need a place where a drunk dude stumbling around during a show won’t look completely out of place.
